The Plastic Free Gathering 2025

Saturday 20th September

Did you know that the plastics industry is looking to triple its production in the next 25 years?! Do you want to do something about that? 


The first ever UK Plastic Free Gathering is being hosted in Birmingham next month – it’s a one day event, bringing people together for action on single-use plastic!  

The event, which is supported by Sustainability West Midlands, is a fantastic opportunity to be inspired, network and collaborate with like-minded individuals. So, if you’re a sustainability professional, environmentally-conscious business, an environmental group, or an individual who wants to see a reduction in single-use plastic and plastic pollution, then this is the event for you! It will be an opportunity to drive ambitious action, with case studies and ground breaking ideas and solutions from leaders and changemakers! 


The programme includes sessions on:

  • The kids inspiring the next generation in the campaign against single-use plastic and plastic pollution
  • Reducing single-use plastics in education
  • Reducing single-use plastics in businesses
  • Reducing single-use plastics in councils
  • Reducing single-use plastics in communities
  • The first Plastic Free mountain in the world?

There will also be a film screening of the inspiring film ACTionism on Friday 19th September, in collaboration with Birmingham Friends of the Earth.

Every Monday

The Community Gardening group at Ley Hill meet every week to learn how to grow food, techniques for looking after fruit trees & bushes, and other skills such as woodwork. They also grow a mix of flowers and have grand plans to put up lots of bird boxes around the site! All of the food grown can be taken by the group to use at home.

Every Thursday

Pop along to Milebrrok Hall and spend a couple of hours chatting and growing fresh vegetables and fruit. Listen to the birdsong as you tend to the raised beds and brush up on our horticultual skills. Each month, you will use the seasonal vegetables to make budget friendly soups in the hall.

Bird Watching for Beginners @RSPB Sandwell Valley

Hedgerow Berry Bootleggers – Drink Making from Forest Foraging

In this hands on workshop, you will be collecting berries from the established hedgerows in the woodland, before heading back to use your foraging finds to inspire your choice of drink, using the recipe card suggestions as a guide. Outdoor Learning Officer Ellie will provide you will all you need to create something that will tickle your taste buds – however if you like the idea of a stronger option like sloe gin, rosehip vodka, blackberry whiskey or hawthorn gin then please do bring 250-350ml of your spirit of choice.

Autumn Equinox Workshop

September sees us celebrate the second harvest – Mabon. It is a harvest celebration of balance, gratitude, and the abundance of the Earth. It marks a sacred moment of equilibrium in the natural cycle, where day and night are of equal length. Bat Walk & Moth Night @ RSPB Sandwell Valley

Saturday 20th September

A unique evening to encounter some amazing night-time wildlife. The RSPB team will introduce you to the secret world of the reserve wildlife at night for an exclusive experience. It will begin with a fascinating talk on bats before exploring the reserve to see what creatures are flying after dark, what plants are glowing and experience the hide after dark to watch roosting birds and bats skimming the lake for insects. You will warm up around a fire with some campfire snacks, a hot drink (included in the price of the ticket), and a moth natter before discovering which ones you found.
