The Piece crafting studio make eco-friendly homeware and gifts, including custom pieces to enhance the aesthetic of your home or office. Owner, Hannan, has always been one to avoid waste, challenging herself to reuse, repurpose and reprocess items, if possible, which led her to start working with Jesmonite. They sell candlestick holders, vases, coasters, trays and pots (that can be used for makeup brushes, toothbrushes or stationery) from this wonderful material, which is made from water-based materials and doesn’t require chemicals to use, and is considered a sustainable material.
We asked Hannan some questions: What do you need to consider to ensure your business is as sustainable as possible? “Everything I make is made in small batches with minimum waste. Any surplus mix is used to make terrazzo chips which are stored and used in new pieces. Our packaging is eco-friendly, including our thank you notes, which are handwritten on the back of A5 poster card which can be displayed as art and reused.” What do you love about running your business?
“I love being able to make custom pieces. I know how important it was for me to have what was in my mind’s eye, so being able to offer that to others is a great feeling.” And finally, what do you love about Birmingham?
“I love Birmingham’s diversity and the people. I was born and raised in Brum and it’s changed so much over the years, but remains one of the best cities in my opinion!”
