Every Monday
The Community Gardening group at Ley Hill meet every week to learn how to grow food, techniques for looking after fruit trees & bushes, and other skills such as woodwork. They also grow a mix of flowers and have grand plans to put up lots of bird boxes around the site! All of the food grown can be taken by the group to use at home.
West Heath Community Centre Garden

Pop along to Milebrrok Hall and spend a couple of hours chatting and growing fresh vegetables and fruit. Listen to the birdsong as you tend to the raised beds and brush up on our horticultual skills. Each month, you will use the seasonal vegetables to make budget friendly soups in the hall.

Highbury Orchard Community CIC Volunteer Sessions

Rowheath Community Garden

You will start the day at 10am with a relaxed birdwatching walk around Rowheath Park. Then have a go at sowing, growing, and harvesting your own food. Whatever your garden situation this day workshop looks at the vegetable and fruit crops you could grow in the spaces you have. In this hands on session you will learn practical skills of seed sowing, growing, and caring for your crops so that you can grow your own crops at home.
Bird Watching for Beginners @RSPB Sandwell Valley
Saturday 2nd & Tuesday 5th May
Join RSPB volunteers on an easy monthly walk around the reserve, whether you are new to birdwatching or just want to discover more about wildlife at the reserve, the team will give you tips on getting started, point out the different birds, how to identify them and how the seasons bring different changes to the valley.

This immersive walk will stimulate your senses as the peace of early morning is broken by a euphony of birdsong echoing throughout the woods. You will listen to the beautiful songs of Warley Woods’ resident birdlife as they herald in a new dawn. Get your binoculars ready and your ears tuned in, nature is all around you all you need to do is stop and listen.

Wake Up to One of Nature’s Greatest Concerts — Live! Join RSPB Sandwell Valley expert volunteers for a Dawn Chorus Walk and experience the reserve at its most magical. As the first light breaks, the landscape comes alive with the songs of returning warblers, migrating birds, and our much‑loved resident wildlife. It’s the perfect experience for bird lovers, casual nature walkers, and anyone looking for a moment of calm connection with the natural world.

Nature Connections and Mindfulness in Warley Woods
Sunday 10th May
To enhance your wellbeing and sense of connection with nature join Sophie, trained in Nature Mindfulness on a walk through beautiful award winning Warley Woods. The walk will be guided slowly and gently, working through the senses and play to gain a deeper connection with nature . There will be opportunities for mindfulness through meditation, moments, nature journaling, poetry and whatever you might like to bring to the session. This walk will be a celebration of spring nature connections and the joy of connecting and sharing special time together. The walk will end on the edge of the meadows with some barefoot walking – you might like to bring a picnic lunch and stay as long as you like.

Forage & Fire
Saturday 23rd May
Step into the woods and learn the essential bushcraft skill of fire by starting at the source. On this immersive half-day course, you’ll spend time foraging in local woodlands for natural fibres and tinder materials, discovering what nature provides and how to use it effectively. You’ll then learn how to create fire using a ferrocerium rod and natural materials, building confidence as you progress through different fire-lighting levels — from cotton and basic tinders through to more challenging natural materials like birch bark and feather sticks. This is a hands-on, practical course designed to build real skill and understanding.
Secret Cannon Hill Saturday Short Walk

This is a Saturday 3-mile walk around some of the lesser-known parts of Cannon Hill Park (Holders Woods, along River Rea, through Centenary Woods and back through Moor Green Allotments).
